Atlantic Beach Golf Club
(silver) A
new links-type course in the dunes nest to
the Atlantic Ocean that has been cut out of
the natural fynbos vegetation. Straight driving
and good wind play is essential, because the
fynbos is a no-go area. Very difficult course
to play in the strong south-easter that blows
during the summer. Sheltered course from the
Cape south-eastern.

Bellville Golf Club (bronze)
Renowned
for its superb conditioning and excellent
greens, this undulating parkland layout has
the largest membership in the Cape. Watch
out for “cardiac hill,” the 11th hole, if
you’re not a fit person. Sheltered course
from the Cape South-eastern

Clovelly Country Club
(gold) Set
in the tranquil Clovelly valley, this relatively
short layout, built among sand dunes, rewards
accuracy off the tee and provides players
with scenic views of the False Bay coastline.
Known for its superb greens.

Milnerton Golf Club (silver)
A links-type
layout has modified considerably in recent
years with the building of a housing estate
on the course. It has lost much of its earlier
remote charm as a result. Several holes run
alongside the beach, and it’s very testing
in a wind. There are superb views over the
Atlantic Ocean and towards Cape Town.

Mowbray Golf Club (silver)
Relatively
flat parkland course that has formerly hosted
the SA Open, with a noisy section of seven
holes between a motorway and a railway line,
and a quieter 11 in the suburbs. Lost many
of its pine trees in earlier years.

Rondebosch Golf Course
(bronze) Surrounded
by busy highways and canals, across the highway
from Mowbray, this is not the most aesthetic
course in the Cape, but the parkland layout
is a good test of golf, and boasts superb
conditioning.

Royal Cape Golf Club
(gold) South
Africa’s oldest golf club has a mature, tree-lined
parkland layout, with new modern greens, which
is always superbly groomed. There are excellent
views of the Cape’s rugged mountains.

|
|
|
Steenberg Golf Club (silver)
Another
residential estate layout built around a vineyard,
and overlooked by mountains and forests. It’s
a flat site that has been transformed into
a very attractive layout, with parkland and
wetland features. There are also large areas
of waste bunkers.

|
|
|
Westlake Golf Club (silver)
Relatively
flat and short parkland layout, close to the
False Bay coast, the course is noted for its
good drainage in winter and all-year round
superb conditioning.
